The Essence of Elegance
Built in the 1910s as the winter retreat of industrialist James Deering, Vizcaya is a masterpiece of Mediterranean Revival design. The creative team of Paul Chalfin, F. Burrall Hoffman, and Diego Suárez masterfully blended Italian Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements with the native subtropical ecosystem of Miami.
The formal geometric gardens flow into the preserved native Rockland Hammock forest and coastal mangroves. Directly facing the bayfront terrace sits 'The Barge,' an iconic limestone breakwater carved with allegorical Baroque sculptures by Stirling Calder, providing a majestic and cinematic setting over Biscayne Bay.
